How to remove berries, fruit & juice stains
Rinse a fresh fruit or berry stain promptly with cool water and keep soap away from it — soap sets fruit stains. Then soak in warm water with a sodium perborate (oxygen) bleach for 15-30 minutes and launder with heavy-duty detergent; Iowa State recommends washing right away in the warmest water safe for the fabric with an oxygen bleach. [1][2]
- Cool water
- Sodium perborate / oxygen bleach
- Heavy-duty laundry detergent
- Dishwashing liquid
- White vinegar
- Rubbing alcohol
Method
- Rinse the fresh stain promptly with cool water — never soap, which will set it. [1]
- Soak in warm water with a sodium perborate (oxygen) bleach for 15-30 minutes. [1]
- Launder promptly with heavy-duty detergent in the warmest water safe for the fabric, adding an oxygen bleach. [1][2]
- If the stain persists, soak 15 minutes in 1 quart warm water with 1/2 teaspoon liquid dishwashing detergent and 1 tablespoon white vinegar; rinse, sponge with alcohol, wash, then soak 30 minutes in 1 quart warm water with 1 tablespoon sodium perborate bleach. [1]
Inspect the item while still wet and repeat treatment if any color remains — machine-dryer heat permanently sets a leftover fruit stain, and old tannin stains may need a bleach solution. [4][3]
If that didn't work
For an old or stubborn stain, repeat the detergent-plus-oxygen-bleach wash; aged tannin stains may need a bleach soak appropriate to the fabric before they release. [3][1]
Cautions
Check the care label first and pretest every cleaning agent on an inconspicuous area for colorfastness. [1]
Oxalic acid (used in the stubborn-carpet remedy) is poisonous: wear rubber gloves, store and dispose of it properly, and keep it away from children. [1]
marble: Fruit juices etch marble — wipe marble immediately with warm sudsy water, rinse, and dry. [1]
cotton, linen: Dilute vinegar with 2 parts water before using it on cotton or linen. [1]
Carpet & rugs
Method
- Blot the stain with a solution of 1 teaspoon neutral detergent in 1 cup lukewarm water applied on a white cloth, then blot with a vinegar-dampened cloth, repeat the detergent solution, sponge with clean water, and blot thoroughly. [1]
- If the stain persists, apply a laundry pre-soak product, cover it with a moistened pad for 10-15 minutes, then sponge with clear water and blot. [1]
- Alternatively, sponge with 1 tablespoon liquid dish soap mixed in 2 cups cold water, blotting until absorbed, and repeat until the stain lifts; a remaining shadow can be covered with baking soda, left to sit, and vacuumed. [2]
If that didn't work
For a stubborn spot, wearing rubber gloves, mix 2 tablespoons oxalic acid, 1 tablespoon white vinegar, and 8 tablespoons glycerin with enough butyl alcohol to clear the mixture; leave on the stain for a few minutes ONLY, blot it up with clean cloths, flush with water, and re-blot. [1]
Cautions
Pretest cleaners on hidden carpet, ventilate when using caustic solutions, wear rubber gloves, and avoid overwetting. [1]
Upholstery & mattresses
Method
- Blot with 1 teaspoon neutral detergent in 1 cup cool water, then with a vinegar-dampened cloth, repeat the detergent solution, sponge with clean water, and blot thoroughly. [1]
- If the stain persists, apply a laundry pre-soak lightly, cover with a moistened pad for 10-15 minutes, then sponge with clear water and blot. [1]
- If it still remains, apply glycerin, sponge with cool water, apply a combination solvent such as Shout or Spray 'n Wash, rinse with clear water, and blot dry. [1]
If that didn't work
Repeat the glycerin-plus-combination-solvent sequence, rinsing and blotting between rounds. [1]
Cautions
cotton, linen: Avoid overwetting — the fabric finish can migrate and leave rings; dilute vinegar with 2 parts water on cotton or linen. [1]

Where sources disagree
- Rinse fresh fruit stains promptly with cool/cold water before soaking and laundering. [1][2]
- Berries and fruit juice are tannin stains to be washed with detergent in hot water when fabric-safe — even rinsing the spot in hot sink water before washing if a high-heat wash isn't suitable. [3][4]
We show both positions rather than silently choosing. When in doubt, follow your care label and the more conservative option.

Several commenters (2006-2013) reported that pouring boiling water through blackberry and blueberry stains removed them completely, one reported the hot-water trick failed on a hoodie but cold water followed by lemon juice worked, and another said a cold milk soak works.
“The pouring hot water trick worked like a charm.”
