Enzyme cleaners and presoaks
Where the sources actually recommend enzyme products, how they say to use them, and the two hard restrictions.
What the sources use them for
Enzyme presoaks appear in the sources almost exclusively for protein stains. Kentucky Extension groups blood, milk, cream, baby formula, baby food, vomit, feces, urine, and mucus together as protein stains, and says dried protein stains should be scraped free of crusted matter and soaked in cold water with a detergent or an enzyme presoak product. Texas A&M's guide says enzyme products aid removal of protein stains and help restore whiteness, and uses an enzyme soak as the follow-up when traces of a protein stain survive the first treatment. Individual stain pages match that pattern: Georgia Extension's blood instructions include a soak in lukewarm water with an enzyme presoak, Tide says to wash poop stains with an enzyme-based detergent, Georgia's coffee and tea page pretreats by soaking with an enzyme-containing laundry detergent, and Iowa State suggests an enzyme presoak for persistent ketchup marks on colored fabric. How to use them
Kentucky Extension's directions: soak 15 to 30 minutes; enzyme presoaks are most effective in warm-to-hot water. (Note the sequence — for a fresh protein stain the cold-water soak comes first; the enzyme product is for dried stains or leftover traces.) Texas A&M simply says to follow the package directions, then rewash and inspect. [1][2]
Two hard restrictions
Do not use enzyme products on silk or wool. Kentucky Extension states the reason: silk and wool are protein fibers, and the enzymes digest protein — the fiber as well as the stain. [1]
Do not combine an enzyme presoak with chlorine bleach. [1]
What we don't cover
Beyond the protein-digestion point above, none of our fetched sources explains enzyme chemistry (which enzymes act on which soils, temperatures at which they denature, and so on), so this guide doesn't either. Kentucky Extension does name the enzyme classes found in presoak products — amylase, protease, and lipase — without elaborating further. [1]
